A tiny village in the northern reaches of New Hampshire, Dixville Notch is best known for being the first place in the U.S. to declare its election results.
Just 20 miles from the Canadian border, Dixville Notch is a place so tiny that if you blink you’ll miss it. The ‘notch’ refers to the steep pass through the White Mountains and you’ll find little else in Dixville apart from the resort hotel The Balsams. This grand old New Hampshire hotel is the location for the famous ‘midnight vote’ that has put Dixville Notch on the map.
U.S. electorial tradition holds that the handful of voters in Dixville Notch cast the first results for the presidential election. This was started in the 1960 election when voters in Dixville Notch gathered in the Ballroom at the Balsams to cast their votes at midnight and since then television crews have gathered at the Balsams to record the results of both the New Hampshire primary and the presidential election before anywhere else in the United States.
