Harvard

HarvardHarvard University is the oldest institution of learning in the United States, it forms the heart of Cambridge Massachusetts and has provided some of the best brains in Boston.

Harvard dates back to 1639 and is named after its principle donor: John Harvard, a Cambridge graduate from England, who bequeathed around 400 books that formed the basis of the new college’s library. Today Harvard’s Library contains over 15 million volumes, making it one of largest academic libraries in the world.

Harvard is considered the most liberal of the big three Ivy League universities including Princeton and Yale and has built up a reputation as one of the world’s leading research centres. Throughout the years, 75 Nobel Prize winners have been affiliated with Harvard along with 15 Pulitzer Prize winners and 7 Presidents of the United States graduated from Harvard. These include John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Teddy Roosevelt, Franklin D Roosevelt, John F Kennedy and George W Bush.

But the centre piece of Harvard University is the famous Harvard Yard, enclosed, withdrawn and separated from Harvard Square by a gateway with the proclamation ‘Enter to Grow in Wisdom. Inside this hallowed world of wisdom, Harvard Yard is set with tranquil lawns, while the surrounding red brick buildings present a walking history of American architecture. The oldest building here is Massachusetts Hall dating from 1720, while in the centre of the yard is the white granite building of University Hall, designed by Charles Bulfinch in 1815. Outside this building is Daniel Chester French’s statue of John Harvard, the puritan benefactor of the university, which has long been the target of its students’ pranks.

Location: Cambridge Massachusetts. Take the Red Line to Harvard Square.
