Museum of Fine Arts

The Museum of Fine ArtsThe Museum of Fine Arts is one of Boston’s must see attractions, with one of the largest collection of works by Monet outside Paris and one of the largest collections of Asian art in the world.

There are free guided tours daily at the museum and it’s well advised to take one to save yourself getting lost! The tours focus on different sections, but first and last tours of the day take in a general tour of the museum and its fabulous array of art works.

The museum has something for everyone, with a world renowned collection of impressionist works including Renoir’s Dance at Bougival, Van Gogh’s Weaver alongside the museum's famous Monet collection where you’ll be drawn in by Monet’s poppy fields, waterlillies and valleys with works such as The Valley of Crease and Charing Cross Bridge in the haze and fog.

Rather aptly, the MFA boasts a collection of portraits of the local heroes that contributed to Boston’s revolutionary heritage. You’ll find John Singleton Copley’s iconic portrait of Paul Revere (1768) along with portraits of John Quincy Adams and John Hancock (pictured with quill in hand ready to write his signature!).

Indeed Sargent was asked to work on the newly built MFA in 1916 and created 8 giant oil paintings and 12 reliefs for the rotunda Sadly, Sargent died in 1925 before the last of the murals were installed.

The MFA’s Asian collection ranges from Islamic art to Indo-Chinese artefacts including ceramics, engravings, Japanese swords, and Chinese artefacts dating back to the Han Dynasty. The MFA also has a hugely impressive collection from the ancient worlds with Greek, Etruscan and Egyptian artefacts including the magnificent stone bust of Prince Ankh-haf dating from 2520 BC.
