New England

Whether its New England’s fall foliage, skiing in New England, shopping, beachcombing in Cape Cod or bar hopping Boston, New England is a tourist destination with a wealth of experiences to offer.

New England is a region where old English traditions have merged with New World ideals. This is ‘America’s Attic’ and this corner of the country is crammed with places of huge historic and cultural significance as the land of the Pilgrim Fathers, of the American Revolution and the birthplace of the nation.

Situated in the northeast corner of the country, New England is made up from six distinct states, each with their own proudly individual character. Massachusetts is the cornerstone of New England. Its state capital Boston has been at the heart of New England’s cultural and political life since the Pilgrims first arrived here from England. Connecticut was formed by members of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and as the state where the U. S. Constitution was penned, rivals Massachusetts in historic significance while its university of Yale vies with that of Harvard in Boston. Between these two states lies tiny Rhode Island, the first of the original 13 American colonies to declare independence from British rule. New Hampshire and Vermont feature rugged mountain ranges, but contrast in character between verdant and liberal Vermont and the conservative and stark ‘Granite State’ of New Hampshire. Last but by no means least is the state of Maine, as big as the other five New England states combined. Maine is famed for its rugged coastline and a seafood diet of lobsters and clams.

If you thought America lacked history then New England will prove you very, very wrong. The history of the United States began right here in New England, after a group of Puritans from England sailed across on the Mayflower and settled at Plymouth , Massachusetts in 1620. It was also here in New England that the movement for American Independence was fermented and where the first shots of the American Revolution were fired, on the battlefields of Lexington and Concord. New England later played a key role in the movement to abolish slavery and in the 19th century became the first region in the United States to become industrialised.

As America’s first civilisation, New England proudly preserves its heritage at places like the Plimoth Plantation and Mayflower II and Strawbery Banke, while the Freedom Trail links Boston’s landmarks with the city’s revolutionary history.

New Englanders have played major roles in the political life of America. From patriots like Paul Revere and Samuel Adams and signatories of the Declaration of Independence like John Hancock and John Adams to leading New England families such as the Kennedys and the Bushes who have played major parts in the country’s politics.

New England is also rightly proud of its literary heritage. From the Transcendentalists and early American writers like Hawthorne and Melville to best selling modern writers and playwrights like Stephen King and David Mamet, New England has produced some of the country’s most prominent writers, thinkers and artists. A virtual New England literary trail stops by Concord and the homes of Emerson, Louisa May Alcott and Henry Thoreau, Amherst to Emily Dickenson’s house and Salem to the House of the Seven Gables of Hawthorne’s classic novel.

New England’s varied scenery offers stunning Maine coastline, the lakes and mountains of New Hampshire, Vermont’s green patchwork of dairy farms and woodlands, Connecticut’s old colonial buildings, the elegant mansions of Newport Rhode Island, the seascapes of Cape Cod and the vibrant city life of Boston. Adding to this variety are the seasons of New England, which bring about the region’s famed fall foliage, a winter wonderland for skiers in Vermont and New Hampshire, a gloriously colourful spring and a hot but short summer.

For British and European travellers, New England is little more than a six-hour flight away and the current low dollar, added to lower sales taxes than in New York, makes New England the perfect destination for shopping for Christmas presents and bargains year round.

From shopping to scenery, outdoor pursuits or city breaks, in New England you’ll find something for everyone anytime of year.
