Plimoth Plantation & Mayflower II
The Plimoth Plantation and the Mayflower II are two excellent living history museums outlining the origins of the New England settlement in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
Moored in Plymouth Harbour a short walk from Plymouth Rock, where the Pilgrims first set foot on American soil, is the Mayflower II a replica of the ship in which they sailed in 1620. The Mayflower II mirrored the journey of it predecessor sailing from Plymouth in England in 1957 and is one of Plymouth’s main historical visitor attractions. On board, actors cum guides play their part in traditional garb and talking traditional garbled olde English, while showing visitors around the 104ft long vessel and portraying in close detail the lives and hardships of the original 102 passengers of the Mayflower.
While 3 miles south of the town is a painstaking reconstruction of the 17th century Plimoth Plantation. This reconstructed Pilgrim Village transports visitors back to 1627 and as with Mayflower II, costumed guides play the roles of villagers and illustrate their lives and handicrafts in Shakespearean English. The village includes several family homesteads and a village hall and church.
Along with the village, this historic visitor attraction also houses a Wampanoag Homestead outlining the lives of the indigenous people in the 17th Century. The guides here are Native People and while they are dressed in traditional Wampanoag cloths and carrying out traditional roles such as canoe building and farming they aren’t in 17th century character like those in the village. The Wampanoag Homesite offers some fascinating insights into the ingenuity of the Native Peoples such as how their homes were designed to withstand hurricane force winds.
The Plimoth Plantation also includes The Nye Barn exhibiting rare breeds of livestock used by the Pilgrim settlers and the Crafts Centre, where artisans produce a wide range of Settler and Wampanoag handicrafts before your eyes.
Combined tickets are available for the Plimoth Plantation and Mayflower II and are must see attractions for anyone who believes that America lacks history or heritage. Be prepared to be astounded and entertained.
