New England offers some of America’s best shopping with great quality and variety at great prices. And given the current low dollar and closer proximity of New England to Europe than anywhere else in the states its no surprise that many people are making transatlantic shopping trips.
In America each state can set its own sales tax (VAT) on goods and New England state taxes are extremely competitive. On clothes Connecticut has no sales tax on items under $50, Vermont under $110 and Massachusetts under $175. Maine has a 5% rate of sales tax, while New Hampshire, whose state motto is ‘Live Free or Die’, has no sales tax at all, ditto Rhode Island.
Whether you’re hunting for bargains, designer brands or that something special you’ll find it in New England. For shopping in Boston, there’s designer boutiques to rival New York set along Newbury Street and Boylston Street and over 150 upmarket stores in Copley Square and the Prudential Centre. Bargain wise Boston has the famous Filene’s Basement and the landmark Faneuil Hall, while Massachusetts also has Wrentham Village Premium Outlets offering further bargains.
Maine is famed for its retail outlets in Kittery, Freeport and Ellsworth offering huge variety with many famous brand names and incredibly low prices. New Hampshire’s North Conway has a huge outlet village at Settler’s Green and malls in Manchester and Nashua. Connecticut has premium outlets at Clinton Crossing and the Tanger Outlet Center at Westbrook along with malls at Farmington and Stamford. Shopping malls can be found at Providence and Warwick in Rhode Island, while Vermont’s main shopping areas can be found at Church Street Marketplace in Burlington and the Manchester Designer Outlets with a number of exclusive stores in this upmarket town. Vermont is also famed for its arts and crafts and Frog Hollow stores in locations across Vermont sell a range of goods from state approved artists and craftspeople.
