Portsmouth’s maritime museum, Albacore Park is the site of the famous submarine the USS Albacore built in Portsmouth.
Outlining Portsmouth’s rich maritime history and naval heritage Albacore park features two of the world’s most impressive experimental submarines and visitors can climb aboard and see how its submariners lived in sardine like conditions.
The USS Albacore was built in Portsmouth and when it was launched was the fastest submarine of its kind. The Albacore was a forerunner of the future and its teardrop hull provided the prototype design for today’s submarines. With a crew of 55 men, the Albacore served the United States from 1953 to 1972 and in all that time never had to fire a shot in anger. Instead the Albacore was a submerging lab, test driving new sonar systems, dive brakes and other mechanisms which can be found in modern submarines around the world.
Albacore Park also includes a museum and memorial garden dedicated to the Americans who have been lost their lives while serving as submarine crew.
