White Mountain National Forest

Covering some 800,000 acres, the White Mountain National Forest is New Hampshire’s main draw with year round attractions for outdoor enthusiasts, leaf peepers and skiers.

The White Mountain National Forest is a rugged wilderness of lofty mountain peaks and thickly wooded valleys blazing with colour situated in the northern region of New Hampshire. The White Mountains have been a wilderness retreat since the 1850s from rugged camping hostelries such as the one established by the local legend Ethan Allen Crawford to palatial resorts like the Balsams and the Mount Washington that were built around the 19th century to cater for the wealthy summer vacationers.

As well as these exclusive resorts, there are ample camping sites in the White Mountains, while the regions main hubs can be found at Conway and its extension North Conway best known for its long stretch of shopping outlets, Lincoln set beside the Loon and Kancamagus mountains, Bartlett besides Attitash and Bear Notch and Jackson arguably the prettiest mountain village of them all set with white steeple church and covered bridge amid the majestic mountains.

Visitors come to experience the great outdoors of the White Mountains, whether its hiking along the 1,200 miles of trails through the national forest (indeed the Appalachian Trail passes through on its 2,000 mile trek to Georgia), leaf peeping along the White Mountain Trail, or skiing and snow boarding at its Loon Mountain or Attitash resorts, the White Mountains has it all.

Presiding over the majestic scenery is Mount Washington, the tallest mountain in New England, and visitors can hike, drive or take the cog railway to its lofty summit. Surrounding Mt Washington is the group of mountains known as the Presidential Range, while cutting through the rugged scenery is the White Mountain Trail.

This 100 mile road route is perfect for exploring the rugged scenery any time of year, but is best explored during the fall foliage. From Conway, the trail takes you along the famous Kancamgus Highway, climbing to almost 3,000ft outside Lincoln and offering stunning panoramas across the mountain tops. From Lincoln route 3 takes you through Franconia Notch past the stop off for the waterfall at Flume Gorge. This 800 ft gorge ending in a stunning waterfall was discovered in 1803 and attracts visitors by the busload. The trail continues along route 3 until it meets route 302 where it follows on to Crawford Notch and cuts through the granite mountain valleys passing Bartlett and Attitash before turning back towards Conway.

Whether you’re looking for natural splendour, stimulating outdoor activities or a respite from the busy world, the White Mountain National Forest is the number one destination in New England.
